Solar Thermal Collectors
SolSmart offers flat-plate collectors that guarantee great year round value for money and perform very well for domestic water heating applications. The number of collectors you'll require depends on your average hot water consumption and is determined when we come out to do a site visit.
Vacuum tube collectors offer extra performance in colder winter conditions and are incredibly efficient. They work well for both domestic water heating and space heating applications and require a slightly higher initial investment that may suit your needs better.
How Solar Water Heating Works
Solar water heating systems are comprised of a few simple components that work together to provide you with pre-heated water that will feed into your existing water heating configuration.

- Solar Collectors - provide the surface and absorber to capture the sun's energy when available
- Heat Transfer Fluid - flows through the collectors and takes availble heat from the sun
- Pump Station, Controller & Temperature Sensors - pump the heat transfer fluid when heat is available down to the heat exchanger
- Heat Exchanger - exchanges heat from the transfer fluid to cold domestic water which is then stored in the solar storage tank

A typical residential solar water heating system will cost anywhere from $4,000 - $8,000 depending on how many people live in your home and how much hot water you require.
You can expect to have a properly maintained solar thermal system operating easily for 15 years and well over 20 years. Most components come with a 5-year warranty and SolSmart offers a two-year warranty on labour because one of our primary goals is to ensure your satisfaction.
